Vera Moutinho is a multimedia journalist, journalism lecturer and researcher working across digital storytelling, climate journalism, media literacy and journalism education. She worked for almost a decade at PÚBLICO, coordinating Multimedia and later joining Azul, the newspaper’s climate and sustainability section. She now works as a freelance multimedia and climate journalist. Her work has received national and international awards for multimedia, digital and environmental journalism. She teaches at ESCS-IPL and researches at LIACOM and the UNESCO Chair in Communication, Media Literacy and Citizenship, focusing on climate, disinformation and journalism education.

This workshop starts from everyday classroom challenges rather than the technology itself, showing HEI teachers how generative AI can help adapt existing materials for learners with different prior knowledge, interests and learning styles. Working on their own teaching materials, participants will produce a new resource — a differentiated task, quiz, or audio/video summary — and leave with a clearer sense of where AI is genuinely useful and where a teacher's own judgement remains essential.

About this workshop
In the AI-HED project, a wide range of evaluation activities have been carried out — student surveys, focus groups with students and teachers, and analysis of teachers' course logbooks. Dietmar presents an overview of the evaluation findings, compares them with the current state of the art in AI-related teaching research, and outlines scenarios for the future direction of higher education. In the interactive part, participants develop ideas for designing AI-infused teaching courses and advancing curricular design of degree programs.

Dietmar Paier heads the Teaching & Learning Center at the University of Applied Sciences BFI in Vienna. His work focuses on national and international projects on teaching innovation, continuing education in higher education pedagogy, and learning analytics. He teaches methods of social research and career development.

About this workshop
Most of us were never taught to use our computers to their full potential, and generative AI risks widening that gap by turning us from collaborators into an audience. This hands-on workshop shows a practical way back to agency. Participants build a simple, reproducible research workflow that connects three free tools — Zotero for capturing and annotating sources, Obsidian for linked notes, and Claude for grounded generation. The core lesson is that the value is not in clever prompts but in how you collect and organise your own research. By the end, professors will have seen (and started to build) a workflow that lets them ask AI for a lesson plan grounded in their own reading, rather than in whatever the model happened to invent.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Explain the "AI as assistant, not wizard" model, and why organising your own research matters more than clever prompting.
- Install Obsidian and navigate a template-based note vault, recognising the core note types (Definitions, Literature Notes, Persons, Organisations, Clippings, Prompts).
- Capture an academic source and take notes on it — highlights and comments — in Zotero using the browser connector.
- Migrate Zotero notes into Obsidian as linked literature notes using the Zotero Integration plugin.
- Connect an Obsidian vault to Claude and prompt for a lesson plan grounded in their own notes, using a structured Markdown prompt.
