A two-day workshop on artificial intelligence (AI) tools in the context of higher education, held on February 26 and March 5, 2025, brought together more than 100 educators from four partner institutions in the Netherlands, Austria, Croatia, and Portugal.

For years, universities have been struggling with a challenge: how to accommodate students’ different learning styles in a system that relies on uniformity The rise of generative AI offers a refreshing approach to this problem.
Traditional teaching methods often fail to take into account the diverse preferences of students. Some people understand concepts better through conversation, while others do better with written material. Until recently, scaling such customized approaches seemed unattainable. On 7 and 8 November 2024, the kick-off meeting for the AI-HED Project took place at the School of Communication and Media of the Polytechnic University of Lisbon (ESCS-IPL).

After many months of working together to prepare the proposal and with the project already in its beginning stages, with various activities already underway and after several online meetings, the team met in person to officially start the project.

Four Higher Education Institutions submitted the application of the project “Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education Teaching and Learning” (AI-HED), that has been awarded with 250.000 euros and received 89 points out of 100 by the European Commission.
The Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) was the applicant organisation, in partnership with the University of Applied Sciences BFI Vienna (UAS-BFI), the Polytechnic University of Lisbon (IPL) and the University of Zagreb - Faculty of Organization and Informatics (FOI).
